Once you get into sewing, you’ll find that you start collecting lots and lots of fabrics. I know I spend tons of time at fabric stores and online fabric sites (probably too much time). Unfortunately, fabric is not as cheap as we would all like it to be – this is why it pays to look for bargains. Here are a few tips:
Sales: I always go to Joanne’s when they are having a sale. They often discount their fabrics anywhere from 20% to 50%. These are the times to stock up. Keep note of their sales by signing up for their email alerts here.
Coupons and Online Promotional Codes: I often purchase fabric from online retailers. I find it easy to comparison shop if I am looking for a particular design. The best part about online retailers (especially the larger ones like Fabric.com, Hancock Fabrics, HouseFabric and Jo-Ann’s) is that you can usually find a promotional code for discounts. I just Google the name of the retailer and “coupon code” and I will almost always get something. Jo-Ann always has a 40-50% off one item promotion going on. Fabric.com often has a 20% off coupon available. You just need to hunt!
Repurposing: This is probably the best way to get great deals, however it does take some searching! I recently went to Ikea and got some great deals on their fabrics, and as I was leaving decided to take a browse in their “As-Is” section. I found a bin of all textiles (returns of pillows, bedding, curtains, etc.). I was able to get a HUGE curtain made from beautiful home decor fabric – probably 4 yards) for only $15. And it was lined, so I have double the fabric to use! Here is a picture:
Expect to see some bags made from this soon!
eBay: Don’t forget eBay! There are plenty of eBay stores where you can get some nice deals on designer fabrics and supplies. The nice thing about eBay is that you can sort your search by price, including shipping, so you will know you got the best price.
Hopefully these tips help you in your quest for fabrics. My next project is sitting on my sewing table waiting for me to start…..I just need to find a little time! I’ll be sure to post my results and review when I finish.
