Every Spring I make each of my girls a dress to enjoy for the season. This year I chose Pattern K156 by Ellie Mae Designs. The exciting news is that I picked up two of these patterns…one for me and an extra that I could give away to one of YOU!
Why I Chose This Pattern
I don’t like to get all complicated when making dresses. I like a fun, quick sew which this pattern proved to be.
What I Loved
The simplicity, of course! I completed this dress in a few hours (and that included a lunch and play-time break). The dress pretty much consists of 3 pieces – the bodice, the skirt and the belt (ribbon).
This pattern covers sizes XXS (3) – L(10) so this allows me to make a dress for both of my girls. I will post more photos when I make the 2nd dress.
What I Didn’t Love
The directions. I’ll be honest, for a Kwik Sew pattern the instructions were a little lacking, but then again, I like detail! A beginner may have a difficult time with this, but any intermediate level sewist or someone familiar with making little girl’s dresses can breeze through this. I do wish this pattern provided an option for replacing the ribbon with coordinating fabric as I did (no worries, I’ll tell you how.)
> If you are comfortable with zippers, I highly recommend replacing the regular zipper with an invisible one. It makes for a much nicer closure! And, add an eye hook and loop to the very top to secure. > If you want to use coordinating fabric instead of ribbon, simply cut strips of fabric 3″ wide and iron the edges under by 1/2″. This will give you a 2″ wide “ribbon”. Follow the pattern directions for adding to the dress.
> Instead of using ribbon for the bottom of the dress, I used a simple binding. You can choose to use nothing and simply hem it, or even use pre-packaged bias tape.
When I make the girls dresses, I always let them choose the main fabric from my collection. Melissa immediately settled on the my newest addition of Capture The Flag in Pink by Riley Blake. While I could have chosen the easy way out and used an accent fabric from the same line, I noticed that Pop Garden from Heather Bailey matched perfectly!
Ok, I know you this is the part you are looking for! I have an extra pattern that I will mail to one lucky winner.
Simply leave a comment here telling me WHO you will make this dress for if you win!
> The winner will be selected randomly and will notified by e-mail. The confirmed winner will be announced on my blog and via Facebook.
> The winner will have 48 hours to get back to me, otherwise a new winner will be selected.
