Have you heard of it? If you haven’t, you are missing out – especially if you have school-aged kids.
What is Geocaching? Basically it’s a “real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game” that uses GPS devices to navigate to specific locations and find a hidden “treasure”.
Basically if your smart phone has GPS ability, you can download a FREE app, create a FREE account and start hunting! There are millions of geocaches all over the place – there is bound to be one near you.
What is a Geocache? There are many different types of Geocaches. Many of them are simply traditional containers that hold a log book and possibly some tradable items (these are the ones that we typically search for as the treasures inside are usually very kid-oriented – think stickers, key chains, etc.). You can view the different types of Geocaches HERE.
What are the Rules? There are 3 simple rules to follow when Geocaching…
- If you take something from the “cache”, leave something in it’s place of greater or equal value.
- Sign the log book.
- Log your experience at www.geocaching.com
Are Geocaches difficult to find? Geocaches can be easy to find or they can be very difficult to find. They can take minutes, hours or days to locate depending on their difficulty level. Thankfully the Geocache app will let you know how difficult any specific geocache is to find.
My kids and I pretty much stick to the easier geocaches, but don’t let the “easy” level fool you – it takes us an average of 30-60 minutes to find them! This one was hidden on the backside of bridge railing!
With another month of summer to enjoy, I highly recommend you download the free app today and start hunting for hidden treasure! Your kids will LOVE you for it and it’s an activity that everyone in the family will enjoy. My 9 year old and 6 year old are equally entrenched in this “game”, and I have to admit, I find it quite enjoyable myself!
